2024 Asia Journalism Forum

Every year, the forum brings to Taiwan outstanding journalists from across Asia, including from Hong Kong, Macao, China, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Myanmar, and Indonesia. At the forum’s seminars, they engage with Taiwan’s journalists, students and faculty of Departments of Communication, and other media enthusiasts. Over the years, the forum has become widely recognized within Taiwan’s media community as an important platform for international exchange.
In 2024, a record-breaking 76 countries worldwide held either presidential or parliamentary elections, representing a total population of 4.2 billion people. Asian countries including Taiwan, India, Indonesia, and South Korea held elections in the first half of the year, followed by elections in the UK, US, and the European Union at year-end. The outcomes of these elections will shape global politics for decades to come.
In many countries, politics is becoming more divided, so it’s crucial for the media to remain professional and truthful. Particularly, social media has changed how voters receive political information, making some voters more extreme in their views and less tolerant of others. This can lead to stronger dislike for political opponents and more divided politics. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used for political purposes, spreading fake images and videos during campaigns, as well as producing deep fake videos that mimic real news segments, severely distorting facts and undermining the truth and trust upon which democracy relies.
Therefore, this year the forum’s theme is “Journalism in an Historic Election Year”, inviting outstanding journalists from neighboring countries that have recently held elections to come to Taiwan for exchanges.
