Young UK journalists lean towards activist roles, away from objectivity – new survey

最新調查:英國年輕記者傾向扮演激進主義角色,而非客觀公正

In the aftermath of Brexit, journalists were accused of failing their democratic role. So-called mainstream media have been criticised by alternative media for supposedly reinforcing the establishment’s agenda. And journalists’ traditionally most treasured value – objectivity – has been questioned in the face of the war in Ukraine, social movements such as Black Lives Matter and existential threats like climate change. It’s no wonder that many journalists themselves are perturbed by what is happening to their profession.

New survey shows the extent of class privilege in UK journalism

最新調查顯示英國新聞界存在階級特權

Our data does not suggest that a privileged upbringing makes it more likely for journalists to hold a top management position. Where it does make a difference, though, is whether they work for national media or outlets with international presence (like the Guardian or the Financial Times). Of those who do only 9% come from a working-class background, while 72% come from a privileged one (the rest come from the middle groups in our classification).

Publishers remain unsure of what comes next, even as Google’s ad tech is ruled a monopoly

即使Google的廣告技術遭裁定為壟斷 出版商對接下來會發生什麼事仍感到不確定

If Google is made to divest its ad server and exchange it could emerge from this lawsuit less tethered to the open web than ever. With fewer obligations to support the broader digital ecosystem, Google would be free to invest in its owned and operated platforms — YouTube, Discover, AI Overviews and whatever else keeps users inside its increasingly self-contained universe.
The result: less centralized revenue for publishers and even more control for Google.

Free Expression Seen as Important Globally, but Not Everyone Thinks Their Country Has Press, Speech and Internet Freedoms

言論自由在全球被視為重要,但並非所有人都認為自己的國家擁有新聞、言論和網路自由

Overall, a median of 61% of adults across 35 countries say having freedom of the press in their country is very important, with another 23% saying it is somewhat important. But only 28% say the media are completely free to report the news in their country, with an additional 38% saying the media are somewhat free.
